Monument House

Monument House sits inside a boulder field in Joshua Tree, California — a cluster of geometric volumes in terracotta, sage, and gray designed by architect Josh Schweitzer to look as though they have always been there. I came as a resident. I stayed as a witness. For several days I moved through a building that made you pay attention to light differently: how it enters a room through a parallelogram opening, how a trapezoidal door frames boulders like paintings, how the desert announces itself through every surface.
