On Luis Barragán's last residential commission — and the quality of light at a particular hour
There are buildings that reveal themselves immediately, and buildings that make you wait. Casa Gilardi is the second kind. Luis Barragán's last residential commission does not announce itself from the street. It asks you to enter, to slow down, to follow the corridor before you understand where it leads.
I had seen photographs of the pink corridor for years before I saw it in person. The photographs are good. They are not the thing.
What the photographs cannot capture is the quality of light at a particular hour — the way it moves, which is not metaphorical but literal, as the sun shifts and the color of the walls shifts with it. Barragán understood light as a material. He worked with it the way a sculptor works with mass — shaping it, directing it, using it to make a room feel like something that exists in a specific kind of time. Casa Gilardi feels most fully like itself in the late afternoon. I know this because I stayed long enough to find out.
The pool room is what most people have come to see. The blue water, the yellow wall, the single column that Barragán placed not for structural necessity but because he understood that a column in that position would make the room complete. I stood in that room for a long time. I took very few photographs. Some spaces resist reduction, and this is one of them. To photograph it is to risk suggesting that you have understood it, which is not something I am willing to claim.
What I will say is this: Casa Gilardi is a building that teaches you how to be in it. It slows your pace in the corridor. It stops you at the window that frames the jacaranda tree as though the tree were a painting. It asks you to sit at the edge of the pool and simply look. Most architecture does not make these demands. Most architecture is indifferent to the quality of your attention. Casa Gilardi is not indifferent. It is specific. It was built for a particular way of inhabiting space, and if you allow it, it will teach you that way.
I left slower than I arrived. That is the test of a building, for me. Whether it changes your pace. Whether it gives you something that takes a moment to settle. Casa Gilardi passed.
